September Traditions - A Season of Gathering

Sep 06, 2026

There is something about September that feels like a gentle invitation to gather.

To gather apples from orchard trees.
To gather around the tea table.
To gather little comforts back into the home.
And perhaps, most importantly, to gather ourselves after the fullness and freedom of summer.

The days are still touched with warmth, yet the mornings arrive a little cooler. The light turns softer and more golden. Evenings begin to draw us indoors earlier, and suddenly the thought of cinnamon simmering on the stove, a candle glowing in the kitchen, and something warm baking in the oven feels especially lovely.

September does not ask us to rush into autumn.

It simply invites us to notice that the season is beginning to turn.

This month's traditions are a celebration of that beautiful in-between—a season of orchards and apples, warm cups of tea, ivory mums at the doorstep, beeswax candles, and the first comforting bakes of autumn.

Welcome, dear friend, to September Traditions: A Season of Gathering. 🍎🕯️

01. A Bloomery Bake

Brown Butter Apple Crumble Tart

There are certain aromas that seem to announce the arrival of autumn before the calendar ever could.

Apples bubbling with cinnamon. Butter slowly browning on the stove. Vanilla. A golden crumble becoming crisp in the oven.

This month, our September bake is my Brown Butter Apple Crumble Tart—a beautiful celebration of the orchard harvest.

A tender shortbread crust is layered with homemade apple butter and cinnamon-spiced apples, then crowned with a generous golden brown-butter crumble. I love serving it slightly warm with a delicate drizzle of glaze and, of course, a pot of tea nearby.

It is wholesome, gluten-free and refined-sugar-free, yet feels every bit as comforting and celebratory as the apple desserts we remember from childhood.

Make it for Sunday afternoon tea. Bring it to the table after supper. Or invite someone you love over and serve generous slices while the kettle whistles in the kitchen.

Sometimes the beginning of a tradition is as simple as deciding:

Every September, we bake the apple tart.

02. Seasonal Tea

An Autumn Apple Tea

As September begins to cool, I find myself reaching for teas that feel just a little warmer and more fragrant.

For our seasonal tea ritual, brew a pot of Apple Cinnamon, Vanilla Chai, or Earl Grey and serve it alongside a warm slice of apple crumble.

Bring out a favourite teacup.

Place a little linen beneath the pot.

Perhaps clip the last roses from the garden and place them in a small pitcher on the table.

Tea time does not need to be elaborate to feel beautiful.

Even ten quiet minutes in the afternoon can become a little threshold between one part of the day and the next—a moment to sit, sip, give thanks, and notice the season outside your window.

This is one of the reasons I treasure tea so deeply. It gives us a reason to stop before the day has passed us by.

03. Preserving the Harvest

Homemade Apple Butter

One of my favourite ways to mark the changing seasons is by preserving something that belongs to them.

In August, it was golden peaches.

In September, it is apples.

Homemade apple butter is autumn tucked into a little glass jar.

Fresh apples are slowly simmered with cinnamon until they become deep, fragrant and velvety—a beautiful spread to spoon onto warm scones, swirl into cakes, layer beneath apple crumble, or simply enjoy by the spoonful.

There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about preserving fruit this way.

Perhaps it is knowing that women have stood over simmering pots at harvest time for generations, taking what was abundant today and carefully preparing it for the months ahead.

Make a few little jars.

Tie one with ribbon and give it to a neighbour.

Keep another tucked away for a cold November morning.

It is such a simple way of allowing September's orchard sweetness to linger a little longer.

04. Home & Beauty

Adorn the Autumn Doorstep

Before filling the house with pumpkins and autumn décor, I love beginning very simply.

A beautiful basket of ivory mums beside the front door.

Perhaps two, if your doorway allows.

Add a simple wreath, sweep the front step, shake out the doormat, and allow your entrance to quietly say:

Autumn is welcome here.

Our homes do not need to be constantly redecorated or filled with things in order to reflect the seasons.

Sometimes one thoughtful touch is enough.

A basket of flowers.
A branch gathered from outside.
A bowl of apples on the kitchen table.
A candle beside the sink.

Beauty often has less to do with how much we add and more to do with how intentionally we notice and tend what is already there.

Let the September doorstep be simple, warm and welcoming—a little reminder each time you arrive home that this is a place worth tending.

05. Nature & Seasonal Rhythm

Visit an Apple Orchard

If there is one outing I hope to make into an annual September tradition, it is a visit to the apple orchard.

There is such simple pleasure in wandering between rows of apple trees beneath the September sky, reaching for ripe fruit and filling a basket together.

If you have children, allow them to choose their own apples.

Taste one beneath the trees.

Take the long way through the orchard.

Bring a little picnic or a thermos of tea if the day is cool.

And when you return home, place your basket somewhere you can enjoy seeing it before those apples become pies, crumbles, apple butter and afternoon snacks.

These little outings may seem ordinary while we are living them, but they are often the memories that remain.

The same orchard.
The same season.
Little hands growing bigger each year.

Tradition turns an ordinary afternoon into something we anticipate, remember and return to.

06. A Cozy Autumn Ritual

Light the First Candle of Autumn

There comes an evening each September when you notice it.

The sun has disappeared earlier than expected. The rooms are dimmer. There is a slight chill in the air.

Instead of resisting the shorter days, I love the thought of marking that first evening by lighting the first candle of autumn.

I especially love a simple ivory rolled beeswax candle in an antique-style brass holder—the kind that feels as though it could have been carried through a quiet old house generations ago.

Light it as you prepare supper.

Carry it to the tea table.

Let it glow while you read, journal, pray, or tidy the kitchen at the end of the day.

And rather than thinking of the darker evenings as something being taken away, allow that little flame to remind you of what this new season gives us:

warmth, intimacy, gathering and home.

It is a tiny ritual, but perhaps that is precisely why it can become so meaningful.

The Heart of September

Gathering What Matters

Perhaps September's invitation is not simply to gather apples or flowers or candles.

Perhaps it is to consider what we want to gather close as we enter another season.

Who do we want around our table?

What rhythms do we want to return to?

What do we want our children to remember about home?

What deserves a little more of our attention—and what might we gently allow to fall away?

A beautiful life is rarely created in one grand gesture.

It is cultivated through repeated, ordinary acts of care.

We bake the tart.
We put on the kettle.
We tend the doorway.
We take the children to the orchard.
We light the candle.
We sit down together.

And slowly, almost without noticing, these little things become the traditions of our home.

May your September be filled with warm cups, apple-scented kitchens, beautiful tables, open doors, and many reasons to gather close.

Welcome to a Season of Gathering.
